Valentina Marchei/Ondrej Hotarek SENIOR PAIRS:
Ondrej: Our mindset towards the Short and Long Program was always the same, we basically wanted to go out there and skate our hearts out. Technically we didn't have much time to work on elements, so the goal was to perform the things we can do, at their best. We skated clean in the Short Program and we wanted to do the same in the Long Program.
Valentina: Some people after the Short said “Oh, they found themselves fourth!” No, that's not the way we saw it: we skated like we do at home in training. And that's what we wanted to do in the Long Program as well. Today we did one mistake out of four minutes, but we didn't skate consistently clean Long Programs at home either so that's a good success rate. We are really happy, we came here to show that we have a lot of skills, we have good presentation and we wanted to be noticed. This was our business card for the figure skating world.
Ondrej: We didn't attempt a triple twist here as while learning it we almost broke Valentina's elbow and my head – quite a few times actually, not just once – in fact we are practicing it wearing protections and helmets and we have a good catch. It's just that we don't feel safe to do it without protections yet. We decided to think of all the rest, to put all the other elements that we can do safely without getting injured.
Valentina: We didn't want to mess things up during the program and losing focus: I am not that experienced yet, Ondrej needs to talk to me in order to keep me focused. As a singles skater sometimes I tend to go for my own road, I motivate myself and get concentrated on my own. This is not about me, but about us, so he brings me back into the pairs mindset throughout the program.
Ondrej: During our first practices I used to get angry, I said “You cannot talk during a program!” but now I am the one talking, and it happened that I to found myself out of breath before a spiral or a lift!
Valentina: For example for the death spiral, the backward-inside one which is not my best one, I told him to tell me when he feels the right tension and thus when I can go into it, because sometimes I feel the right tension and he doesn't. And you cannot risk to miss a whole element.
Ondrej: Basically our goal was to execute well all the elements and enjoy performing them on the ice too.
Valentina: It wasn't easy, trust me, to be on the ice as a pair skater after five months of training and skate in the last group at the European Championships. I almost felt like a kid in the candy store (being in the last warm-up group) during practices- This morning we finished earlier our practice and I was like “Please Ondrej, can we stay in more time? I am enjoying it so much!” and he was like “We cannot stay here, we have finished all our elements”. But when you are skating in the last group in competition, it's a prize but a huge responsibility as well. Before, I was alone, but now I have responsibilities towards my partner. We wanted to land that triple Lutz so badly! When you start to tell each other “Ok, the Lutz is the first element, if it works: ok, good. If it doesn't: clean up your mind and start from scratch”, than it means that you both want to land that jump perfectly! Because it had happened in practice that one of us would miss it or both did, and despite that mistake we were able to deliver a clean program.
Ondrej: We did a mistake in the Long, it happens, we were both a bit off in the jump rhythm.
Valentina: And I am still new to this discipline: during the program I have to think of my jump, of following him, of keeping the curve, and I missed the jump pattern. It happens. The good thing is allowing yourself to do mistakes: if you do that, then you take mistakes in the middle of the performance as part of it. You relieve some pressure off your shoulders. And, in the end, even if we had done that combination cleanly, our final placement wouldn't have changed.
Our goal for the World Championships is to make us notice again in competition and to work on the Twist in the practices from now onto that competition.
Ondrej: After Nationals we didn't have a lot of time to work on it: now we have a couple of months and that would be our technical goal for Worlds. Our overall goal there is to skate cleanly as we did here and to qualify for the Grand Prix in the next season.

Valentina Marchei/Ondrej Hotarek SENIOR PAIRS:
Before heading to Nationals we were nervous, but that's part of the game. When you perform well your programs in training a thousand times it is obvious that you want to skate them in the same way in competition as well. Unfortunately during the program you only have one chance to try to perform everything at its best on that day, it all depends on how you handle the situation. Therefore, yes, there's always pressure. We decided to skip our morning practice the day of the Free Skating just because we didn't want to skate on a different ice a couple of hours later. We preferred to do a simple off-ice practice at Palavela instead of going to PalaTazzoli.
Valentina's knee, that she injured at the beginning of our partnership, is now completely healed and is even better than before because a lot of work has been put in strengthening all the muscles involved in its movements..
Regarding the European Championships, we want to take one step at a time. Our technical goal will be to execute a triple Twist. besides improving levels in the Axel Lasso lift and Death Spiral in the Long Program; we obviously also want to perform our programs in the same way as we skate them in practice.
